Everything you ever wanted to know about my thoughts on food and our meal plan for the week.

This is totally boring but here's my meal plan for the week. Also, I'm weird about food.
This week Jerry is working 11 hours everyday. His company has some sweet incentives for the top sellers and so he wanted to be awesome and win!!
So since I'm solo parenting all week - a really busy week to boot, the first thing I added to my grocery list was WINE. Then I pulled out the paper plates and paper cups and made sure I had some lavender bubble bath. ;)

So. That's our menu this week. I do measure out most of their food. I am a helicopter parent like that. I have found that if I limit how much the kids are drinking during a meal then they have more room for yummy food, then they're less hungry during the day. We have milk with breakfast and dinner. If they are thirsty and it's not a meal time, they ONLY have water and they don't mind one bit. We don't do juice. Juice is so sugary and they can get lots of fiber from eating real fruit. I offer a veggie mix of broccoli, carrots, peas, and cauliflower at basically every meal. If they don't like what we're having or they're still hungry after they eat their food they are more than welcome to eat veggies. I do the medley because Joe loves carrots, Sam likes the broccoli, Molly and Iris eat anything and Lucy only likes certain things.... when she feels like it. :)
We eat at the same time everyday and do not snack during the day. This makes them more hungry and apt to eat at meals, helps keep the grocery budget low, and they don't beg me for food all the time.
We eat at 8am, 11am, 2pm, and 5pm. I love having dinner at 5 because I can cook dinner while they are having screen time so they leave me alone! ;) Another perk to having dinner at 5, is that on Mondays and Wednesadys we all go to the ball park to watch Sam play baseball at 5:40 and on Tuesdays the boys have Scouts. We're trying to have a date night every Friday night and so we get pizza delivered for our babysitter. Makes everything so much easier.
I try to buy the healthier option whenever I can. We buy cage free eggs, ground turkey, whole wheat, etc. I can't afford to buy all organic or nut filled breads because I have so many hungry little bellies to fill, but if I can stay on budget and be really careful about what I'm making then I can at least feed them as healthy as I can. Our farmers market is starting up next month and I am so excited to see what we can purchase there for our menu - especially since it's about 4 blocks away!
I'm trying to get into the mindset that my family's health and cooking real dinners opposed to eating out is FUN! I try to drink a glass of wine while I cook dinner because that makes it fun and I try to have Nora Jones or one of my fav relaxing music on because that makes it fun. Sometimes cooking isn't fun, but it still needs to be done so I'm trying to have a better attitude about it. Making dinner is also a great time to pray over my family or think about something I appreciate about them.

I try to stick to a budget of $600.00 a month.
Groceries this week, $136.00

I'll try to document better next month because my life is dull and I don't have much to blog on. ;)
What's your menu look like? What silly food things do you do?

  1. I suck at cooking because I work so much. I'm envious of your ability to meal plan.. Lean Cuisines have become my best friend.

    You're a good mom Katie!

    1. Thank you Felicia, that is so sweet of you to say. I didn't use to be very good at meal planning, and a lot of times even if I plan something I still end up throwing my hands in the air and calling for pizza. :)
